H.E. MP. WafaaBani Mustafa participated in a session organized by the Coalition of Women MP.s from Arab Countries to Combat Violence against Women in cooperation with the International Federation for Peace and Sustainable Development (IFPSD) and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy entitled: (The Multiple Faces of Violence against Women) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in the presence of His Excellency MP. Khamis Attia and H.E. Dr. Sima Bahouth, Representative of the Permanent Mission of Jordan to the United Nations. Bani Mustafa spoke about the Arab convention launched by the coalition in cooperation with the League of Arab States in December of 2016 and addressed the specific additions that the convention brought.
She also talked about political violence and the challenges that limit women’s access to decision-making places and indicated that political violence must stop because it will make efforts to achieve equality go in vein and that will send a negative message to future leaders. As for the proposed solutions, she indicated that this starts with political parties, amending legislation and the media. She also announced that the coalition will launch a campaign to combat political violence.
At the international level, she affirmed that states should issue cooperation agreements to reduce violence against women and girls, monitor budgets to support women’s political participation, and develop national plans to implement Resolution 1325 and a fund to support women’s political participation.
