The Coalition of Women MPs from Arab Countries to Combat Violence against Women congratulates its members and women in the Arab world on the occasion of the Arab Day of Combating Violence against Women.

This day, which coincides on January 12 of each year, is based upon the recommendations adopted by the Regional Conference of the Coalition held in Amman on 12-13 January 2015 entitled: (Combating Violence against Women in Arab Countries in Armed Conflicts and Democratic Transition Stages) under the patronage of H.R.H Princess Basma Bint Talal, in cooperation with Westminster Foundation for Democracy.

The conference came out with several recommendations, including the activation of the membership of the Coalition at the national level, and mobilizing the support for the celebration of the Arab Day of Combating Violence against Women to make it a special day to commemorate the victims of all forms of violence against women, and to make it an opportunity to assess annually the achievements that has been done so far.

Other recommendations of the conference included:  the activation of mechanisms and regional legal framework to support the protection of women from violence through the establishment of an Arab Convention to prevent and control violence against women. As well, supporting, establishing, and activating the Arab Court for Human Rights, in addition to the activation of national legal mechanisms to support the protection of women through the development of a national model law compatible with international standards and many other important recommendations.

The Coalition is continuing its mission. Last year, it launched the Arab Convention to Combat Violence against Women and Girls, and Family Violence. It hopes to continue its work in developing its vision, work plan, communication strategy, and reviewing the current status of legislation that include contents of violence against women in the Middle East and North Africa. As well, it will continue to work on plans with civil society organizations to move forward with reforms to these specific legislation.
