The Women and Children Committee held a session on April 22, 2024, headed by the Committee Chairperson, Representative Inaya Ezz Al-Din, and in the presence of the Committee members and representatives of the Ministry of Labor and ESCWA.
The meeting came to study the draft law aimed at amending the provisions of Articles 1, 2 and 12 of Law No. 23 dated 9/23/1946 (Labour Law) to include flexible work.
Representative Enaya Ezz El-Din explained, “This proposal was based on a study of the work environment surrounding working women, which showed that a large number of Lebanese working women work in unfair conditions as they do not have protection, social guarantees, or compensation.”
She added: “In this draft, the concept of part-time work is modified, and those who engage in part-time, seasonal, and remote work will become covered by social security, and will receive priority in moving to full-time work if they meet the necessary conditions, in addition to linking the value of work to productivity and not just to permanence.”
Representative Ezz El-Din pointed out that “all the articles presented at the session were approved with minor amendments.” She called on the representatives in the other committees to “adopt it as it facilitates the work of women and guarantees them protection. It also helps men to participate in family affairs, and opens new horizons for young people and activates the labor market, with its impact on economic growth and in promoting justice and social protection. Moreover, It is consistent with the international standards currently adopted in most countries of the world, to which Lebanon has committed.”
