Eight Palestinian women from the northern West Bank village of Burqin gathered to finalize their men-free list for the municipal elections that will be held on Saturday, hoping to achieve an unprecedented victory in it.
The eight women chose the name Capable “Qaderat” for their list, in reference to their conviction of their ability to undertake this experience, which is new in a patriarchal society.
The women’s list is competing with six other lists to win the 11 municipal council seats in a village of about 8,000 people.
The number of women candidates in all the approved lists was 1551, with a percentage of 25.9 percent of the total number of 5,978 candidates. There are nine lists headed by a woman.
