The National Gendarmerie handled about 8,000 cases of violence against women and girls during the first eight months of the current year, according to what was revealed on Sunday in Algiers by the representative of this security apparatus, Walid Riad Bogbo, noting that the phenomenon had recorded a “slight stability”.

This came during the second edition of the Journalists’ Forum to Combat Violence against Women and Girls, organized by the United Nations Population Program and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in coordination with the Algerian government and the Dutch embassy in Algeria.

When presenting the role of the national gendarmerie in combating this societal phenomenon, he made it clear that no less than 7,994 cases were sponsored by this institution, an increase of 0.56 percent compared to the same period last year.

He pointed out that there was a “slight stability” in acts of gender-based violence, adding that out of the total cases that were registered, 51 percent of the acts stemmed from insult and threats, 38 percent were physical assaults, and 4 percent were related to affecting the victims’ personal lives. While 2 percent concerned with the abduction of girls.
