The rape and murder of a 19-year-old girl sparked an uproar that has revived debate over the death penalty and the need to support efforts to combat violence against women. The National People’s Assembly and the Ministry of Justice interacted with the aim of pushing forward a bill to combat kidnapping, and it is reported that in early October, Shaima was kidnapped in front of her house by the perpetrator and her body was later found in an abandoned fuel station in Thania, near Boumerdes, east of Algiers. Local media reported that the girl was beaten and raped before being burned alive.
