On March 18, 2021 The Women and Children Parliamentary Committee agreed to “impose a penalty on those who neglect to report crimes of domestic violence.” The Woman and Child Committee in the House of Representatives held its fourth meeting, in the third annual regular session, of the fifth legislative term, headed by Her Excellency Representative Kaltham Al-Hayeki, and in the presence of the members of the committee. Al-Hayeki stated that the committee continued to discuss the proposal for a law to add a new article (17 bis) to Law No. 17 of 2015 regarding protection from domestic violence, adding that the committee reviewed the views of the Supreme Judicial Council, the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, and the Supreme Council for Women , Bahrain Bar Association, Batelco Center for Domestic Violence Cases along with the Bahrain Women’s Union letter. Al-Hayeki explained that the proposed law includes adding a new penal article to the Protection Against Violence Law, which stipulates a penalty imposed on those who are negligent in reporting any crime that can be classified as resulting from domestic violence, and that came to his knowledge due to his work, whether practicing a medical or Educational profession. Regarding the committee’s recommendation, Al Hayeki said that the committee decided to approve the proposed law in its amended form and submit it to the council’s office in preparation for presenting it to the council during the coming sessions.
