H.E. Bani Mustafa participated in the meeting of the Fifth Goal of the Sustainable Development Goals Coalition that was held in the House of Representatives on 25 November 2019 and indicated that Jordan has made progress on the indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals as it ranked sixth in the Arab world and ranked 81 globally. She noted the necessity of meeting with the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation to reactivate the National Committee for the Sustainable Development Goals.
On the occasion of the launching of the 16-day campaign against violence against women and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, she indicated that 1 out of every 3 girls are victims of violence in the world, more than 71% of the victims of human trafficking are women, and that 1 out of two girls is being killed by a family member. She stressed the need to link the fifth goal with the goals on health and work.  Moreover, she stressed the need to expand the framework of working on the fifth goal to involve the Ministry of Health,the Ministry of Labor, and the health and labor committees in the House and Senate.

She stressed the need to follow up on the issuance of legislation and the post-legislation stage which involves issuing regulations and following up on the implementation of laws. She pointed out that the League of Arab States at its last conference recommended that the Arab Convention to Combat Violence against Women and Girls should be presented to the Arab Ministerial Committee at its next meeting. It’s worth mentioning that the convention was prepared by the coalition and submitted to the League of Arab States by the coalition.

H.E. Sabah Al-Shaar, Chairwoman of the Women Caucus at the Jordanian Parliament, pointed out that the House of Representatives sought to materialize the objectives of the fifth goal, as it abolished Article 308 of the Penal Code, which allowed the rapist to escape impunity. Moreover, she pointed out that the Parliament also passed a law of protection against domestic violence. She talked about the efforts exerted to raise the minimum exceptional age of marriage in line with the objectives of the fifth goal.  She stressed on the importance of focusing on economic empowerment, and emphasized that the House of Representatives approved the alimony credit fund, flexible work system, and imposed on the employer to provide nurseries at the workplace. Moreover, she pointed out that the Social Security Law allows women to pass their salary to the husband and children.
Senator Sawsan Al-Majali pointed out the necessity of partnership between the House of Representatives, the Senate, civil society organizations, the private sector and the media. She also stressed the need to implement the regulations and laws, and emphasized the need to focus on reproductive health and said: “the Higher Population Council works on a national strategy for reproductive health.” She also stressed on the need to empower women economically and ensure that women have access to the workplace.
