On 25/1/2021, Attorney Wafa Bani Mustafa participated in a session entitled The Role of the Higher Population Council (HPC) in Promoting Women’s Participation, in the presence of a number of members of the Women and Family Affairs Committee in the Nineteenth Parliament. She presented an intervention entitled: Jordan’s commitments towards the Conference on Population and Development. She indicated that there are 12 international commitments and that the most important commitments are 3 , called the three zeros, which are: zero unmet need for contraception; zero preventable maternal deaths; and zero gender-based violence and harmful practices, such as child marriage. She indicated that Jordan presented its commitment as a state through its various institutions concerned with following up on the commitments towards the Population Conference according to its capabilities and priorities. She said, “We are pleased to meet the new women representatives and to offer our cooperation because it is important to us that women in Parliament present a real picture to overcome obstacles.” She indicated the importance of proving views and facts through numbers in order to make change.
The committee chairperson, Eng. Abeer Jabour, said that the committee believes in partnership and networking with all parties and institutions that support women’s issues, in order to reach solutions to overcome the obstacles and challenges facing Jordanian women and ways to empower them, pointing to the challenges that women faced as a result of the emerging Corona virus crisis, which caused some of them to lose their jobs in the private sector, and the need to support them to overcome that crisis.
Abla Amawi, SG of HPC commended the committee’s efforts and its endeavor to achieve a political and legislative environment consistent with the requirements of achieving the goals of sustainable development 2030, especially women’s issues, and ways to empower and advance them politically, economically and socially. She presented a report on the status of women in Jordan, and the effective role of the Higher Population Council in enhancing women’s participation. She said that any solutions to population issues focus on three basic axes, namely the enabling environment, the institutional level, and the individual and societal level through awareness and motivation. She added that the council also focuses on proposing national population policies, strategies and action plans based on scientific evidence to support the decision-making process, while focusing on building national capacities in the field of population and development.
Her Excellency Mrs. Reem Abu Hassan talked about the system of protection from domestic violence in Jordan and showed the most important amendments to the law on protection from domestic violence, the legislative system for protecting the family, represented by the constitution and national legislation, and about the role of the national team to protect women from domestic violence.
Her Excellency Mrs. Jumana Ghunaimat spoke about how women’s issues should be presented in a fair manner in the media, and said: “As women, we have a role to present the true image of women, and the most important thing is to form support groups for women because there is an attack on women on social media.” She stressed the importance of having a press for women, similar to the economic, sports press, and so on.
