In Iraq, MP Intisar Al-Jabbouri, the Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Women’s Committee and a founding member of the coalition participated on Friday, 2/3/2018 in a campaign to cancel Article 398 of the Iraqi Penal Code No. (111) for the year 1969. This event was organized by the coalition of women MPs from Arab countries to Combat Violence against Women. And Women for Peace Organization.
The campaign was launched from the Baghdadi House in Mutanabi Street. It is one of the oldest streets in Baghdad and a haven for Iraqi writers and intellectuals. The campaign team then went to Qishla Square, where MP. Al-Jabbouri spoke about the need to repeal Article 398, which discharges the rapist from penalty if he marries his victim.
It is worth mentioning that MP. Al-Jabbouri has already collected 66 signatures from the members of the House of Representatives for the purpose of obtaining the approval of the Presidency Council for the inclusion of this issue in the agenda.
