Tunisia witnessed a 77% increase in cases of violence against women during the current year 2021 compared to 2019, according to Jalila Znaidi, head of the violence committee within the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women. Al-Znaidi indicated that in 2019, the association’s hearing centers received 640 reports of cases of violence, while in 2021 the number reached 1140 cases.

She believes that there is a relationship between the high rates of violence and the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, and the quarantine during the months of March and April 2021.

Al-Znaidi criticized the failure to implement Law No. 58, saying that it had become a dead letter and the necessary mechanisms had not been put in place to implement it, “while obsolete laws continue to be used,” as she put it.

Last November, the Tunisian Ministry of Women, Family and Childhood revealed a huge number of complaints of violence against women in Tunisia.

According to a ministry statement published by the Tunisian “Nesma” website “The Green Line number 1899 for reporting cases of violence against women, which is one of the mechanisms of the National Observatory to Combat Violence against Women, receives more than 15,000 calls annually.”
